'Old' because the coffee is aged. Before the days of modern transport, coffee was often used as ballast on ships residing sometimes for a few years. Once tried the coffees nature had been discovered to have agreeably changed. Coffee is now kept in 'go-downs' for up to 2/3 years, before shipping, in the humid atmosphere of the area, and develops a mildewed appearance. Like a vintage wine the beans mellow as they age. It is always high roasted, and produces a spicy, thick black drink, which is almost oily. It is the classic after dinner coffee.
